Joaquin Update

Hurricane "Joaquin" Communication #7 - Final
Sunday, October 4, 2015

Currently 76, solid overcast, rain, winds northeast @ 10 gusts to 25.

Hurricane Joaquin is now due east of Hatteras and continues to move north rapidly, far away from the US coast. Whew, we're glad. However, we're still experiencing the low pressure system which has been hounding the southeast coast for over a week. Lots of standing rainwater throughout the Island, but fortunately NCDOT has once again performed an admirable job in preparing the dunes for the heavy pounding surf which has been occurring for days. The forecast still calls for rain over the next 36 hours, but finally SUNNY days appear in the forecast starting Tuesday afternoon. The good news of living on a sand bar is that drainage is generally not a problem, so standing water will receded relatively quickly.

If you're currently in a home, please still be diligent over the next day or so and secure outside items subject to the wind as best as possible. While we are not expecting any significant winds, Hatteras can sometimes be unpredictable.

If you're due to check in this weekend, we hope you're already here. If not, travel safely tomorrow and come on down for some great Fall Hatteras Island weather just ahead.

We apologize to our departing guests for less than hospitable weather, but hope you were able to sharpen your board game and card-playing skills. Don't forget to reserve your 2016 vacation early and receive a 5% discount if you confirm before the end of the year. This is our LAST update for Hurricane Joaquin. We look forward to seeing you again, or soon at the beach! Have a great evening!

OBR mourns the passing of Jack Kepler (84)

By every measure Jack was an original personality. There was only one Jack and everybody knew him on Hatteras Island. He was always thinking about marketing. He came up with a lot of the slogans that we still use today in our marketing and was instrumental in acquiring several large accounts on the island because of his marketing abilities. We will all miss Jack an awful lot. Full Story
