Earl Update

Hurricane Update #11, Saturday September 4, 2010

This is Communication #11 of Outer Beaches' Emergency Broadcast Information for Hurricane Earl as of 9 a.m., Saturday September 4. As of 7 a.m., Hatteras Island and Highway 12 has been reopened to all traffic. We awoke this morning to a gorgeous sunrise, clear skies and calm winds. There's still water on sections of Highway 12 throughout the Island, but the sunny weather is drying it our fast. Arriving Guests will observe some debris and the tide line from the 3-6 feet of flooding from the Pamlico Sound which occurred Friday morning. All power and other services are in full operation.

If you are an arriving Guest, please bear with us as we prepare our homes for your stay. Most of our housekeeping staff is also just getting back on to the Island, as well. We also ask for your understanding and cooperation as you enter your home. You may need to rearrange deck or pool furniture and, if so inclined, pick up sporadic debris around the house which the flood waters scattered around. Thank you for your help and understanding as we recover from the effects of Earl, but also be thankful that Earl has not prevented you from being here this week.

Earl passed Hatteras Island about 80 miles to the East, sparing us from its full power. The 24 hours prior to its arrival saw Earl diminish from a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 145 to 175 mph, to a Category 2 as it passed by with 110 mph winds and 130 mph gusts. Hatteras Island only saw sustained winds of 40-50 mph with gusts up to 75 mph - we were lucky but we'll take it! The good news is the next 7 days look perfect - sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-80s, warm ocean waters, and cool nights. We still have some homes available throughout the Fall, so make your reservation today! Also, visit the Outer Beaches Realty facebook page and become a fan - lots of videos from throughout the storm are posted there.

This is our final communication for Hurricane Earl - and we're glad! Thanks to everyone for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers - it worked. Have a great day - settle back to watch soem college football or US Open tennis, prepare for your Labor Day cookout - we hope to see you soon... at the beach!

Really Really Free Market September 4

Saturday, September 4th is the first Saturday of the month…so it's time for another KCA REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET! 9:30 am- 12:30 pm @ Avon Fire Station

Everyone is welcome at this free event, where all are encouraged to give, receive, and create on their own terms. You are invited to arrive between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm with goods, services, skills, performances, stories, crafts, food, games, music, clothing, furniture, plants, and resources to share with others in the community. The event is self-organized by everyone who participates.

Nothing is required for participation, but please think creatively about the skills you have and could teach, the useful or beautiful things you have and don't need, or the resources you can share with people to create something during the event.

Really Really Free Markets celebrate forms of cooperation and gift-giving. They create open spaces in which status is generated by giving rather than owning, and in which giving and receiving happen directly. As at other Really Really Free Markets across the U.S. and around the world, we aim to create and participate in a world in which resources are held in common, we find in ourselves the capacity to meet the needs of others in our community, and "free" means just that: really, really free.

Pageant will benefit island children and families in need

The Hands of Love Organization will be hosting a benefit pageant on Hatteras Island at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies on Saturday, Nov. 6.

All proceeds from the pageant will benefit children and families in need -- the Sparkle Bags for Christmas, Easter Basket program, food baskets for the holidays and much more.

Age divisions for the pageant are:

Baby Miss - birth through 36 months
Wee Miss - Ages 4 to 6
Little Miss - Ages 7 to 9
Junior Teen - Ages 10 to 12
Teen Miss - Ages 13 to 17
Miss - Ages 18-25

All contestants must be residents of Dare County. The entry fee is $60.

There will also be an overall Miss Hands of Love winner. This will be award to the girl who collects the most money, canned goods, school supplies, and any items that could be used in the Sparkle bags.

"This is to promote community service and giving back, which is what pageantry is all about," said Kim Martin, who is the founder and chief executive officer of Hands of Love.

Another part of the pageant will be the Super Model winner. You do not have to be in the pageant to win this title. The organization will have a "super shoot" and anyone can enter this portion. There will be a photographer who has his own magazine and is looking for models. The winner of this title will also win a couple page spread in the magazine. This would be a great opportunity for any girl who is looking to do any kind of modeling, Martin says.

For entry forms or more information, contact Kim Martin at 252-996-0919 or e-mail her at wvgirl2030@aol.com.
