Communication 16: 8/3 at 9 p.m.

Effective at noon Friday, August 4, the evacuation order for Hatteras Island has been lifted. All visitors will be allowed to access the Island.

FROM THE LATEST DARE COUNTY RELEASE:

Beginning Friday, August 4 at 12:00 p.m. there will be unrestricted access to Hatteras Island. As crews continue energizing circuits on the island with the repaired transmission line, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) has assured local officials that reliable and adequate power will be available to enable the return of visitors on Friday afternoon.

The mandatory power restrictions for Hatteras Island are now lifted to allow CHEC to complete the safe stabilization of the power grid.

NEXT STEPS FOR INCOMING GUESTS:

Outer Beaches Realty homes will reopen tomorrow, Friday, August 4, at noon. All Guests who due to arrive this weekend, or who were schedule to be here this week with a prior check-in, are welcome to check in at your respective offices. We can’t wait to see you!

Please note: During the time of the mandatory evacuation Dare County had imposed water and power restrictions. Now that these essential services have been restored, our staff is reopening pools and hot tubs as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience as we work to make sure every pool and hot tub is safe to use.

NEXT STEPS FOR GUESTS WHO EXPERIENCED VACATION INTERRUPTIONS:

FOR GUESTS WITH TRAVEL INSURANCE:

OBR has been working diligently behind the scenes with the travel insurance companies. At first, only one of the three companies said they would cover this event (Modern Voyage). We secured the second one, the provider for international travelers, within days of the incident. Just today, we were successful with the third and final insurance company, Berkshire Hathaway. They secured a direct path for their policy holders to PCL and their insurance company. Berkshire is in the process of direct calling each of their policy holders with specific instructions of how to file their claim for reimbursement. If you had a Berkshire policy and have not heard from them by end of tomorrow, Friday, call us and we’ll assist.

**If you have not yet filed your travel insurance claim, please contact your provider (found here: http://www.outerbeaches.com/vacation-rentals/travel-insurance/) with your reservation number or policy number for to file a claim for coverage. Click here to download the Emergency Declaration for Mandatory Evacuation for travel insurance purposes.

FOR GUESTS WITHOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE:

We will also seek resolution for all Outer Beaches Guests directly with PCL and advise you as we have that information. We do not know for certain how they plan to handle non-insured Guests, but we’ll pass on all the details once we have them.

———–

This was a terrible event for all of us. We empathize with all our Guests who had interrupted or cancelled vacations. We’re hoping this was a once in a lifetime event.

Outer Beaches is excited to welcome all visitors back to Hatteras Island. We would also like to sincerely thank CHEC, Dare County, NC DOT, New River Construction, Lee Electrical, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation, PCL, Governor Cooper, Tideland Electric Cooperative, and all other crews and personnel involved in working tirelessly to restore power to Hatteras Island. It has been an honor to welcome you to our Island, and we will forever be grateful for your swift support of us, our neighbors, and our Guests.

This will be our final communication regarding this power outage. Outer Beaches offices and phone lines are open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and 9 a.m. – 6 pm. Saturday – Sunday. Please anticipate a high call volume and extended wait time. We are working to answer all questions as quickly as possible, so we appreciate your patience as we work through this difficult situation.

We look forward to seeing you…

…at the beach!
