Update 4: Tropical Storm Maria

Currently on Hatteras Island we have partly cloudy skies, 76 degrees, north winds at 15-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph as Maria lingers 150 miles due east of Hatteras. mandatory evacuation of Hatteras Island remains in effect by Dare County.

The wrath of Maria continues this morning. Moderate flooding occurred in several parts of the Island, especially the lower end in Frisco and Hatteras. The pounding surf with waves 12-18 feet and a storm surge of 2-4 feet caused breeches in several other areas as well including Avon and Pea Island. NCDOT crews are busy clearing the road, but we expect water to remain through Thursday, especially during high tides. Winds were in the 40s with a few stronger gusts reaching to 60. Very little rain occurred throughout the storm. As the storm continues to weaken and pull away from Hatteras, we’ll see diminishing effects, but the ocean will be stirred up for some time with very dangerous rip currents.

For those of you who evacuated, we’re sorry that Maria has stolen your long-awaited vacation. If you need assistance with your Travel Insurance claim, please call our office for guidance. If the evacuation order is lifted prior to the weekend and you wish to return for any unused days, we would welcome you back. Please call our office and let us know if you intend to do so. Anticipate localized ocean overwash and use caution when driving.

If you’re due to arrive this weekend, keep your plans intact and prepare for a gorgeous week. The outlook over the next week appears perfect. Other than the next few days, we expect little longer lasting effects and hope you can arrive as planned. No re-entry timeline has been provided at this time, but we will continue to do our part to help crews and officials to restore access to the Island and ensure our homes are safe and ready for your arrival.
