Stretching about 600 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, Avon Pier offers excellent fishing plus a pier house store selling fishing gear, bait and tackle, drinks, sandwiches, gifts and T-shirts. You can also rent fishing gear if you need it. All-day fishing passes or just sightseers. Ask about the October drum tournament and the August children's tournament. The Avon Pier closes in the winter months.

Also known as Canadian Hole because it is a hotspot for windsurfers that hail from Canada. This access makes a day on the sound very convenient. There's lots of parking and a bathhouse with rinse-off showers, changing rooms and restrooms. The little beach can be quite a scene when it's packed with windsurfers and kiteboarders, but a lot of families come here to swim, kayak and lounge on the beach.

Ocean Air offers windsurfing lessons, rentals and gear for sale. They also specialize in kiteboarding, with expert instruction, including group camps and private lessons. They also rent kayaks, Waverunners and catamarans, which you launch from the dock on Pamlico Sound. They sell clothing, wetsuits, sandals, sunglasses and gear from Naish and North Sails.

Ride Hatteras offers windsurfing lessons for beginner, intermediate or advanced riders. Equipment tailored to meet the needs of the individual and the wind conditions of the day. Lessons for kids are available; class size is small.

A full-service windsurfing and kite-boarding shop, Sailworld sells new and used gear. They have a full range of boards, sails, rig components, accessories, wetsuits, fins, hardware and spare parts. Try many models before you buy. They also sell backpacks, streetwear, swimwear, sunglasses and anything else for the active crowd. Now convieniently located in the same building with Hatteras Island Board Sports.

They are conveniently located next to the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry docks at the south end of Hatteras. The charter fleet at Hatteras Landing Marina offers a variety of fishing options to meet the specific needs of our anglers and the species of fish they wish to target.

From 700 feet up, Hatteras sure looks different!

Drive onto the ferry at the south end of Hatteras Island for a free boat ride. You will cross Hatteras Inlet to the charming island of Ocracoke. You'll want to spend a whole day exploring the village shops, restaurants and historic sites. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes long. Once you get off the ferry onto Ocracoke Island, you'll need transportation - your car or a bicycle - because it's about 13 miles from the ferry dock to the village.

This 75-foot head boat makes daily trips to the fishing grounds, with individuals paying by the head or a per-person fee to go along. All the gear and tackle you'll need is provided. The Miss Hatteras takes full-day trips to the Gulf Stream and half-day trips to wrecks to bottom fish for bluefish, trout, sea bass, flounder and more. Reservations are required. Call for prices and times. Also at Oden's Dock is the Little Clam, a 42-foot boat that makes inshore and nearshore fishing trips for Spanish and king mackerel and other fish.

Certified divers should contact Outer Banks Diving. Full service dive shop located on Hwy. 12 in Hatteras Village offering nitrox & hyper pure air. Daily charters aboard US Coast Guard certified vessels 42' Bayou Runner and 37' Dolphin. Gulf Stream wreck diving in warm blue water. Predominantly of WWII vintage, wrecks are in the 70 to 100 foot range. Marine life abound. The boat is docked at Teach's Lair Marina, and the shop is about one mile north. The shop offers rentals and repairs; sells gear, wetsuits and more.

The folks at Village Marina call this the best dinky marina anywhere. Small it is, yet Village offers slip rentals with water and electric hookups, a boat ramp, gas and a ship's store.

This fishing pier, locally called the Rodanthe Pier, offers some of the best fishing on Hatteras Island. Daily, weekly and seasonal passes are available, and the pier is open from April through November. The pier house offers bait, tackle sales and rentals, snacks, drinks, beach supplies, souvenirs, restrooms and a game room.

Rodanthe Surf Shop rents body, surf and skim boards; and takes custom orders for your own Hatteras Glass Surfboard, shaped on site.

Hatteras Watersports rents Wave Runners and Jet Skis, and kayaks, which you can launch on the sound. Parasailing is also offered for those who want to soar high above the water. This is a great place to hang out, with a small beach, volleyball court, picnic area and restrooms with hot showers. Look for the big house on the huge lot.

The site is a former National Park Service Campground that was closed due to lack of funds. The former campground area is a little unkempt and overgrown, but the roads and soundside beach are kept up nicely. Head to the right to the northwest corner of the lot, where you'll find a parking area next to a small cemetery. The sound beach is a great spot for fishing, launching a kite board, sail board or kayak, swimming or sitting in the sun. Not very crowded, the calm water is great for kids when the ocean is rough. Some of the oldest island names are on the headstones at the cemetary, the oldest dates to 1872.

This soundfront recreation center offers rentals of kayaks, sailboats and windsurfing equipment plus lessons in windsurfing and kiteboarding. An onsite launching facility makes it easy to slip into the water. Kayak eco-tours are offered here, and the staff specializes in teaching watersports to children.

The classic surf shop located in an old cottage. It's been a fixture on the island surf scene for more than 30 years. They sell new and used boards and surf-related gear, and rent surf, body skim boards, and beach gear. Surf lessons available.

REAL Kiteboarding's lesson center is on the sound in an area called The Slick: the perfect flat-water area for lessons. REAL Kiteboarding invented the kite camp, and they've taken kiteboarding instruction to world-renowned levels. REAL's most popular lesson package is a three-day camp, but there are numerous other kite-boarding lessons offered, including camps for kids.
