Stretching about 600 feet into the Atlantic Ocean, Avon Pier offers excellent fishing plus a pier house store selling fishing gear, bait and tackle, drinks, sandwiches, gifts and T-shirts. You can also rent fishing gear if you need it. All-day fishing passes or just sightseers. Ask about the October drum tournament and the August children's tournament. Also known as Canadian Hole because it is a hotspot for windsurfers that hail from Canada. This access makes a day on the sound very convenient. There's lots of parking and a bathhouse with rinse-off showers, changing rooms and restrooms. The little beach can be quite a scene when it's packed with windsurfers and kiteboarders, but a lot of families come here to swim, kayak and lounge on the beach. Drive onto the ferry at the south end of Hatteras Island for a free boat ride. You will cross Hatteras Inlet to the charming island of Ocracoke. You'll want to spend a whole day exploring the village shops, restaurants and historic sites. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes long. Once you get off the ferry onto Ocracoke Island, you'll need transportation - your car or a bicycle - because it's about 13 miles from the ferry dock to the village. This 75-foot head boat makes daily trips to the fishing grounds, with individuals paying by the head or a per-person fee to go along. All the gear and tackle you'll need is provided. This is a great place to hang out, with a small beach, volleyball court, picnic area and restrooms with hot showers. Look for the big house on the huge lot. The site is a former National Park Service Campground that was closed due to lack of funds. The former campground area is a little unkempt and overgrown, but the roads and soundside beach are kept up nicely. Head to the right to the northwest corner of the lot, where you'll find a parking area next to a small cemetery. The sound beach is a great spot for fishing, launching a kite board, sail board or kayak, swimming or sitting in the sun. Not very crowded, the calm water is great for kids when the ocean is rough. REAL Kiteboarding's lesson center is on the sound in an area called The Slick: the perfect flat-water area for lessons. REAL Kiteboarding invented the kite camp, and they've taken kiteboarding instruction to world-renowned levels. REAL's most popular lesson package is a three-day camp, but there are numerous other kite-boarding lessons offered, including camps for kids.
