Duck is located on the north end of the Outer Banks. It was so named because of the abundance of waterfowl in the area. Duck sits on the migratory path for wild ducks and other waterfowl therefore there was very good hunting. Many hunt clubs sprang up in the 19th century to take advantage of the large population of ducks waterfowl.
As with any over hunted game, the birds eventually became scarce and wildlife protection laws were passed to protect the birds in the area. The variety of waterfowl attract visitors to the protected lands where they abound in peace.
Quaint is an apt description of this lovely town today. Recently passing from village to an official municipality, Duck has fine dining and shopping. Water sports and quiet beaches draw tourists to this small town atmosphere. Limited commercial development has allowed Duck to remain one of the most popular places to visit in the Outer Banks.
