The Village of Frisco lies between Buxton and Hatteras and remains a small and quaint seaside community. This village used to be called Trent until 1898 when the US Postal Service renamed it to be Frisco.
Frisco is home to heavily wooded areas on the sound side which were once the home of the Croatan Indians. The Frisco Native American Museum and History Center is filled with stories and was created to preserve Native American artifacts, art, and culture. Galleries filled with native art wind through the facility and include information on Native Americans across the United States as well as artifacts from the first inhabitants of Hatteras Island.
The Lost Colonists were on good terms with these Indians and some say that the colonists followed the Indians here to their village of Croatan here at what is now Frisco. Local finds include a dug-out canoe discovered on museum property as well as items recovered from the site of East Carolina University's archaeological dig at Buxton Village.
Today, this beautiful beach village is visited by tourists during the summer season. The popular Brigand's Bay subdivision is located in Frisco to the delight of kiteboarders and windsurfers, sound fishermen, kayakers and sailors. Playtime also includes fun at the 9-hole golf course, wooded miniature golf course or fishing pier! The Billy Mitchell Airfield is located off Highway 12 just west of Frisco where you can charter a plane that gives aerial tours of the island and Pamlico Sound.
