At the south of Hatteras Island lies the village of Hatteras. Well known for the best fishing on the east coast, Hatteras Village houses numerous charter boats which offer abundant sport fishing in the sound or blue water of the Gulf Stream.
Stop by the marinas late in the afternoon to see the day's catch displayed along the docks, which include dolphin, wahoo, tuna and king mackerel. Billfish such as blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish are normally tagged and released. You can see the fishing fleet unload their fresh catch at the end of the day. Many restaurants take advantage of this fresh bounty and you can enjoy it prepared for you nightly.
At the southern tip of Hatteras is the Hatteras Ocracoke Ferry, which offers a free year round forty minute ferry ride to Ocracoke Island.
The "Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum" is located near the ferry terminal. The design of the Museum is unique. The entrance is reminiscent of the timbers of the many shipwrecks that once were so common along the treacherous Hatteras coast.
Unlike the other communities on Hatteras Island, Hatteras did not lose its name when the US Postal Service built a post office in Hatteras.
