Kitty Hawk Kites is pleased to host a day of some of the most spectacular stunt kite flying on the East Coast at the 19th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition: The Wright Kite in 2005, which will be held on September 10th from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., at the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. Sunday the 11th will be used as an alternative day for cancellations due to weather. This event is free for non-competitors and we encourage first-time kite athletes to make this their first event. There will be a banquet and an auction at the Ramada starting at 8pm on September 10th.

On Friday, August 19, 2005 National Aviation Day and Orville Wright's birthday will be celebrated at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. National Aviation Day was established by presidential proclamation in 1939, which designated the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday as an annual day of observance to mark the milestone of manned, powered flight. Orville Wright was born 134 years ago in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1871. Orville Wright made the first flight of 12 seconds and 120 feet at the site of Wright Brothers National Memorial at 10:35 a.m. on December 17, 1903.

Many special activities are planned in celebration of Virginia Dare's 418th birthday on August 18, 2005. Music with the Queen will take place at 11:00 a.m. at The Elizabethan Gardens on the Overlook Terrace and The Lost Colony's special Virginia Dare Night Performance at 8:30 p.m. in Roanoke Island Festival Park are just a few activities you can enjoy on this special day.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Acting Superintendent Patrick Reed has announced that much of the Cape Point ocean shoreline reopened to off-road vehicle (ORV) and pedestrian recreational day use today at 12:00 PM. This includes the entire ocean shoreline on the north side of Cape Point, the Point itself, and some of the southside ocean shoreline following around the Point. These Cape Point beaches had been temporarily closed to protect three piping plover chicks, now fledged.

The National Park Service has posted an Ocean Beach Access Map on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore website, www.nps.gov/caha, to assist park visitors in planning their visit to the beautiful Seashore beaches on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Cape Point, a popular recreational area at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, will be temporarily closed to all visitor use starting Thursday July 14, 2005. The eight-day old piping plover chicks, which hatched from a nest on the South Beach last week, have moved to Cape Point foraging for food. The current foraging site is immediately adjacent to the Cape Point visitor and off-road vehicle use area.
