Celebrating Independence Day is an all-day event on Ocracoke, beginning with the flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. and culminating with a fireworks display at 9 p.m. In between are activities for all ages to enjoy.  The Ocracoke Boy Scout troop will raise the flag at 9 a.m. at the Ocracoke School circle on School Road.

It's Wednesday morning, Fourth of July, 2007, and Avon's shoreline looks like a postcard. The ocean is that clear green color that's more appropriate on a Caribbean Island, the breeze is kicking just enough to be refreshing, and hundreds of happy locals and visitors are enjoying a well-deserved day on the beach with a good book and a cooler of beer.

In September, 2006, 32-year-old Kristina (Eena) Koles lost her life as a result of a rip current in Rodanthe. To continue her memory and help prevent this tragedy from happening again, her family created The Eena Project to educate others on beach and ocean safety.

Sitting nestled among the hodgepodge of homes, churches, and small businesses that make up the village of Frisco, is a large, two-story brown steel building marked with a small unassuming chalkboard sign. The sign reads, “Skate 6-9 Fri., Sat., Sun.”  It indicates to local youth the time and place that their weekend fun begins. It marks Three 1 Six Indoor Skate Park.

ORV access advocates got good news from Washington this afternoon.CU.S. Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr and U.S. Rep. Walter Jones introduced legislation in the Senate and the House of Representatives that would nullify a consent decree and reinstate the National Park Service's interim strategy to govern ORV use on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore until there is a long-term rule.

Raleigh, N.C.--North Carolina scientists and policy experts will make presentations to Outer Banks area residents at a forum on Saturday, June 7 aimed at encouraging state action to reduce the impacts of global warming.  "Feeling the Heat?  Solutions for Climate Change" will be held from 3 – 5 p.m. in the film theatre at the Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo.  The public event is part of a six-city NC Take Action Tour to reduce the impacts of global warming.  "North Carolina can adopt sound policies to prevent the most serious impacts of global warming, but the state must be proactive to prepare our infrastructure and economy from impacts that we can't stop," said Veronica Butcher with the NC Conservation Network.

(MANTEO, NC) May 20, 2008 – The Dare County Tourism Board is proud to again present the North Carolina Symphony for the 7th Annual Summer Pops Concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo on June 5, 2008.  Once again, this event is free to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.  Bring a picnic basket and portable chairs or blankets to enjoy a fantastic program under the stars that will include a suite from Piotr Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Johann Strauss, Sr.'s Radetzky March.  Also highlighting the performance will be a selection by John Williams from The Empire Strikes Back.
