In a ceremony on October 16 in Washington, D.C., the Outer Banks Scenic Byway was named to the distinctive and diverse collection of America's byways. The announcement was made by Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez.
North Carolina's Outer Banks National Scenic Byway traverses one of the nation's and North Carolina's great coastal landscapes. "We're delighted with this new national recognition,'' said Warren Judge, chairman of Dare County's board of commissioners. "And, we look forward to welcoming visitors for memorable trips along this byway.'' The Outer Banks National Scenic Byway follows North Carolina's northern coastline as it juts east into the Atlantic Ocean. Byway visitors travel a route that traverses Bodie and Hatteras islands in Dare County, Ocracoke Island in Hyde County and Down East in Carteret County. Monday, October 12, 2009
The Really Really Free Market will continue at the Avon Fire Station on the first Saturday of the month from 9:30am-12:30pm throughout the winter. For the November 7th event, the focus will be on Fall/Winter clothing items. Since it is the time of year when we are all pulling our items out of storage, it's the perfect time to pass on things we can no longer use. Children and adults alike can bring items to donate to the community and browse through what others have brought to share. For December, the focus will be on holiday items such as decorations and gently used toys, books, or other "giftable" things.

The 16th annual island-wide food drive to stock the shelves of the Hatteras Island Food Pantry in Buxton is now in progress. The drive will continue through December. Housed at the United Methodist Church in Buxton, this pantry serves the people of all seven villages and is the only food pantry on the island that is recognized by Dare County Department of Social Services.
The needs of the Hatteras Island community are even greater than what they were last year. Unemployment has continued to rise as a result of steady declines in the construction trades and the tourism industry. This has placed unprecedented demands on the Food Pantry. Monday, October 12, 2009
The Dare County Department of Public Health (DCDPH) and the Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks (HCOB) are partnering with the North Carolina Dental Society to host a two-day free dental clinic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24, to serve uninsured and under-insured adults. The clinic will be in Kill Devil Hills at the Dare County Parks and Recreation Youth and Family Recreation Park at 602 South Mustian Street.
"Oral health problems not only cause serious pain but also pose a significant health risk. Given the challenge for adults to obtain dental care, particularly for uninsured and under-insured, this clinic presents a great opportunity to provide dental care to those in need and improve their overall health," says Anne Thomas, director of Dare County's Health Department. Patient registration will begin at 6 a.m. on both days and will continue until the maximum numbers of patients able to be seen are registered. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Patients are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, water, and a snack as they may be waiting in line for a while. Monday, October 12, 2009
Starting 9/22/09, motorists traveling across the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, which spans Oregon Inlet and connects Hatteras Island to the mainland in Dare County, will encounter lane closures during the day.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is in the process of making repairs to the bridge, and lane closures are necessary to complete the work. They will occur from 7 a.m. to dusk Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, they will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be no closures on the weekends. Monday, October 12, 2009
When the Hatteras Village Civic Association expressed an interest in establishing a recycling center for the community, it spoke to the right people.
Bill Ballance, vice president of the association, along with Sally Newell approached Dare officials and the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Ferry Division. Both the County and the Ferry Division have proven records in the area of recycling for the benefit of Dare's environment. Dare County is recognized each year as the top recycling county per capita in the state in reports issued by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Allen Burrus, vice chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, commented, ``Our residents are committed to preserving and protecting our environment. People live on and visit Hatteras Island because of the beauty of our environment, and they are conscious of what needs to be done to keep it that way.'' Burrus represents Hatteras Island on the Board of Commissioners.
