The Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival, a six-day celebration of the wild side of the Outer Banks region of North Carolina, is set for November 3 through 8, 2009. As always, the festival includes a wide variety of programs and this year, and -- due to popular demand -- there are an increased number of photography programs to be taught by professionals. Classes have been designed for both the skilled and not-so-practiced, as well as some programs for children and/or families.

The U.S. Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee has scheduled a confirmation hearing for several of President Barack Obama's nominees for positions in the administration, including Jonathan Jarvis as director of the National Park Service.
The hearing before the full committee is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, and will be Webcast live on the committee's site. Obama nominated Jarvis earlier this month as NPS director, a position that has been vacant since the president took office. Mary A. Bomar, who served under President George W. Bush, retired on Jan. 20. Daniel Wenk, deputy director of the Park Service and a career Park Service employee, has been acting director since January. Friday, July 10, 2009
Each year, the National Park Service offers a wealth of free interpretive programs for visitors at the Outer Banks Group parks; Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial. Last year, these National Park Service sites, combined, gave 4,454 scheduled programs that were attended by over 226,000 visitors. Additionally, 58,220 visitors attended film presentations and 11,175 children were sworn in as Junior Rangers.

A summer picnic and silent auction on Thursday, July 16, will benefit the Carey LeSieur Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event will be at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building from 4 to 8 p.m.
Picnic will include barbecue, baked beans, potato salad, slaw, rolls, and iced tea to enjoy at the community building or take out. The donation for the meal is $10, and advanced ticket purchase is encouraged. Tickets are available from Robin Gerald, April Contestable, Susan Wyche, Sandra Crabtree, and Tom Murphy. Tickets can also be purchased at the picnic. Homemade desserts will be available at the picnic's bake sale.
