Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site & Museum Summer programs are offered in June, July & August, all summer long! All programs are FREE with Regular Site Admission Fee. All begin at 2:00 PM, and are outdoors (thus weather dependent). The Lifesaving Station is located at 23645 NC Highway 12, or Milepost 39 ½ , in the village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island (30 min. south from Nags Head or north from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse). Saturday, June 5th is the first Saturday of the month …so it's time for another KCA REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET! 9:30 am- 12:30 pm @ Avon Fire Station. AT THE JUNE RRFM, WHILE ANY DONATIONS ARE WELCOME, WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON BEACH SUPPLIES TO SHARE WITH OTHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. Also, the June RRFM will mark the 1 year Anniversary of the Really Really Free Markets on Hatteras Island! Please come out and show your support, browse the unique and beautiful items, and have a fun time!

Weight Watchers and Friends of Felines - Cape Hatteras Island have joined together for a Twilight Walk 5K through the soundside of Kinnakeet Shores, Avon, on Wednesday, June 2. Registration is from 5:30-6:30, and the walk begins at 6:30. It is open to the community and people will be able to walk or run (if they feel so inclined) 3.1 miles! This event is free, to support Friends of Felines - they are asking for donations of cat food or money for the event, so please bring some kitty vittles with you! Come out and enjoy a healthy, beautiful evening with your friends on Hatteras Island!

As the summer season gets under way, we thought it might be interesting to check the status of the island's real estate market. We are pleased to report that residential sales have been significantly higher (+62.9%) during the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2009. In addition, the average selling price has increased slightly (+1.2%). The average residential selling price from January through April this year was $378,253. Both of these statistics lead to the cautious conclusion that the real estate market on Hatteras Island looks like it is on the road to recovery.
We were also curious to see how the selling prices of cottages in various locations have changed during the buyer's market that we have experienced over the past five years. Oceanfront property prices have been hit the hardest, while non-beachfront properties on the oceanside have held their values the best.
