Like everyone across the nation, Outer Beaches Realty is monitoring the clean-up of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We express our concern for the effects this event is having on our Gulf Shore neighbors, many of whom are our friends in the vacation rental industry.

It seems there is a clamoring among news agencies to see who can come up with the worst case scenario. These reports are based on illustration, not predictions. Generally speaking, it appears that it is a long shot for contaminants to reach the beaches of Hatteras Island. Recent statements by the U.S. Coast Guard put the chances of any residue from the spill arriving on our shore at less than 1 in a 100. Sources from the Weather Channel have told local officials that there are simply too many variables to predict if and how far any signs of the spill would travel up the east coast. One things all the experts seem to agree on is that even if flotsam from the Deepwater Horizon were to spread as far north as the Outer Banks that the character of any debris would be much different than what we are witnessing along the Gulf Coast. They point out that time, currents, the movement of the waves and sun all have a significant effect on breaking down petroleum as it spreads outward from its source. This process of degradation makes it very unlikely that the Outer Banks will experience similar scenarios that we are seeing in the areas of the Gulf. The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau has published an informative Question & Answer sheet that you may find helpful. http://www.outerbanks.org/pdf/Oil_Spil_Q_A.pdf
