After a devastating fire at our main office in Avon on November 18, we are back up and running. Thanks to those of you who exercised patience as we recovered. We have established temporary offices adjacent to the damaged Avon office so look for us there where we will continue to provide our full scope of services, just a bit more tightly in our smaller quarters. We hope to be rebuilt by the summer. In the meantime, please book for 2015 vacation through Outer Beaches. We promise to do everything we can to make it outstanding. See you soon….At The Beach! Friday Fisherman's Corner: The Puppy Drum are Yours for the Taking
Friday, February 14, 2014 - by Bainie Brunson for Outer Beaches Realty
Welcome to the Outer Beaches Realty Fisherman's Corner. Every Friday we will fill you in on what's biting. Look for beach fishing and off-shore updates throughout the year. Although local tackle shops are always the authority on Hatteras Island, we hope that the Fisherman's Corner from Outer Beaches Realty can get you started. Happy Valentine's Day! Perhaps you want to wow your lady by bringing home some freshly caught fish the next time you're on Hatteras. Or maybe, your idea of a romantic date would be spending the afternoon on the beach with your husband, reeling in one after another. Today, love is in the air but in the water you'll find…puppy drum. Also called red drum, redfish, or just reds this fish can be found in great abundance off the beaches of Cape Hatteras for much of the fall and winter months. Generally by February, they've moved on for warmer waters but our water temperatures have remained around 50 degrees keeping this tasty fish close-by. The drum are being caught on trout grubs and bait and shrimp has been the bait of choice. Fishermen, with licenses, are allowed one drum per day that must measure between 18" and 27". Most of the drum we're seeing right now are slot size, meaning they come within those length limits. You may snag a fish that's been tagged by the Department of Marine Fisheries. If so, you're asked to call a number on the tag and report the fish's weight and length and in return they will send you a hat or some other small thank you. These tags help them monitor the population and make sure that these fish stay around for a long time to come.

The speckled trout season has officially closed until June 15th. Due to a cold-stun kill across the sound, this population has been threatened and so has been prohibited from any commercial or recreational fishing for the near term.

You may spot some humpback whales off the coast of Cape Hatteras this time of year and you're sure to be tormented by dolphins who will sometimes come as close as 20ft from the shore and run off the fish. The seas are definitely in abundance right now and these guys know it.

Have fun and fish on!
