Outer Banks DirectionsFrom the North Take I-95 South to Richmond, Virginia. Merge onto I-64 East toward Norfolk / VA Beach. Take I-64 or I-664 toward Chesapeake. From I-64, take Exit 291B Route 168, toward Chesapeake/VA Beach (portions are toll road.) Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East. Follow US-158E down the Outer Banks to NC-12S. Turn Left onto NC-12S. Follow this down to our Avon office. From Virginia's Eastern Shore across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (Route 13) - Follow Route 13, Northhampton Boulevard, to I-64 East (to Chesapeake), take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway.* Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East. Follow this road to The Outer Banks. *Starting May 1, the Chesapeake Expressway increased their toll from $2 to $6 on summer weekends….a 300% increase (although that’s the weekend rate…$3 weekdays). While they had a public comment period, it was obviously just a formality. We don’t believe they had any support for it. We think this is another example of government gone wild and unchecked. Obvious questions are: Why have expenses increased? Interest on loans is at an all time low so original construction expenses should be lower, if anything. Has anyone looked at the expenses to see why they’ve gone up so much? Maybe it due to mismanagement? Why are there 6 lanes of toll booths open at 2 am on a February weekday? This has been observed on several occasions during the winter months where there may be a car every 5 minutes! Yes, 2 of these lanes are unmanned as EZ-Pass lanes, but how about the other FOUR? It’s just plain crazy. Of course this is our commentary, but it sure doesn’t make any sense to us. We advise our Owners and Guests to take the alternative, non-toll route. Coming south, exit at Hillcrest Blvd, East (2nd exit for Hillcrest, marked as "Last Exit Before Toll.") Turn right onto Battlefield Blvd. at the Wawa. Travel about 6 miles and bear right, back onto Route 168 South. This may take an extra 2 minutes as compared to staying on the Expressway. So, saving $6 (one way) on a summer weekend, that equates to a rate of $180 per hour - not sure how many of you value your time that much, but we sure don’t. Even if it took 5 minutes longer, that’s $72 per hour! If heading North, turn left onto Battlefield Blvd at the 2nd light after entering Virginia (also marked as "Last Exit Before Toll.") Go about 6 miles and turn left onto Hillcrest Blvd at the Wawa. 1st right, merge onto 168 North and continue home. So, that’s our 2 cents worth! (Or would that be $180 per hour’s worth?) For a Scenic Drive - Get off I-64 at Hampton, VA. Go South on I-664 through Monitor- Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Take I-64 toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach; then go South on US-17 at Deep Creek, VA. to South Mills, NC. Follow NC-343 South to US-158 South to The Outer Banks. From the West - Via I-95 into North Carolina. Take US-64 East toward Rocky Mount. Follow US-64 East through Williamston and Plymouth, NC. From Plymouth, NC keep going east to Roanoke Island and The Outer Banks. From the South - Coming from South Carolina take I-95 to Wilson, NC. Take US-264 East through Greenville and Washington, NC. From Washington, take State Route 30 to Plymouth, NC and follow the directions above via US-64 East to The Outer Banks. For a Scenic Drive - Take US-17 from South Carolina north to Wilmington, NC. Drive north until you reach Folkstone, NC. From Folkstone, take State Route 172 north to Hubert, NC. From Hubert, take State Route 24 east until it runs into US-70 (before Morehead City, NC). Follow US-70 North from Morehead City to State Route 12 and the Cedar Island Ferry. Take the toll ferry to Ocracoke Island. Then take State Route 12 north to the Hatteras Island Ferry.
