Wednesday, May 16, 2012: Double Team

Ken and Todd tag-teamed the gaffers today while Vickie took pictures!

The dolphin action was very steady today, and these two got all the action they could stand. We caught gaffers all day, quite a few in the mid to upper 20 pound range, but none that broke 30 pounds I don't think. The weather was very cooperative too, and even though thunderstorms are building across the sound this afternoon, we were pretty much in the clear all day. Thanks Ken, and I look forward to working on that list for you some more!

Monday, May 14, 2012: 5/14 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

We ventured offshore slowly this morning due to a steep southeast sea.

The ride offshore took longer than usual, but when we got there, the fishing was as good as it gets. We caught gaffer dolphin until 11:00, and left hem biting. My guys felt compassion on the one "green" member of the group, and decided to take him home. Still, they had all the fish they needed and were thrilled with their great luck! Thanks Howard, and I'll see you guys this fall.

Sunday, May 13, 2012: 5/13 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

The ocean was a little bumpier today, but we still had pretty good fishing.

Fishing was about the same as yesterday, but today there was much laughter, as it always is when Tony and Linda are along. They always have a lot of fun regardless of the fishing! Anyway, we wound up with another nice mess of dolphin today. Thanks guys!

Saturday, May 12, 2012: 5/12 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

Today the ocean was SLICK!

As is the case on every pretty weekend day in the summer, there were LOTS of boats out. I try to steer for a clear spot on the horizon (where I can't see boats) and hope for the best. A couple of the boats found some really good dolphin fishing, but for most of us we had to work pretty hard all day for what we got. Still, by the end of the day we wound up with a pretty nice catch of dolphin. Thanks Ronnie for a great day offshore and for bringing Steve and Brian to share it with you!

Friday, May 11, 2012: 5/11 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

More "off the hook" gaffer dolphin fishing today!

We picked at the gaffers all day, and by quittin' time had another beautiful catch. There were a few billfish encounters around the fleet, in fact we had a brief encounter with a white or a sail on a longrigger, but he never took the bait. There were a few wahoos caught as well, but all of our action was dolphin. Thanks Steve, and I'm looking forward to the next time!

Thursday, May 10, 2012: Breezy With A Chance Of Gaffers!

I'll admit that when we shoved off this morning, it was a little on the windy side, from the north, but the wind died out during the day and the ocean got nicer.

The dolphin fishing wasn't "Katie bar the door", but it was good enough to scrap out what I would call a real nice catch of gaffers. Two of them were 25 pounders +! Thanks guys and I hope to see you again soon!

Tuesday, May 08, 2012: 5/8 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of the ocean today. The forecast didn't sound so hot, from the southeast, but it was really a very nice day!

Fishing was what we would expect for May, great gaffer dolphin fishing. The southeast wind had grass streaked out and hard to fish, but we had a pretty steady bite all day and wound up with a nice catch. There were a couple of wahoos reported and a billfish or two, but dolphin was our bread and butter today. Thanks Scott, and I'll see you guys in October!

Saturday, May 05, 2012: Another Day In The Deep

The weather was perfect again today, and the dolphin fishing was great!

We caught the majority of our catch pretty early, gaffers and big bailers. I jogged offshore to skip some bigger baits, but never raised a marlin today. We did have a moment of excitement when we saw a big blue marlin slashing around after some dolphin, but we were never able to raise him into our baits. Thanks for another great trip Steve!

Friday, May 04, 2012: Worth The Wait

My group for today has been plagued with bad weather, and blown out on their last three charter dates. Today made it all worth the wait!

I didn't have a trip yesterday, but I heard that the dolphin fishing was good and that there had been some blue marlin action as well. We set our lines out close to 100 fathoms and started our search. There was plenty of grass, but it was a scattered mess and really hard to fish. We spent a lot of time cleaning off our baits, but did wind up with a nice catch of dolphin, gaffers and bailers. At 12:00 I detected the presence of fried chicken and suggested to my group that "good things happen when you feed the captain". After choosing a couple of nice looking pieces and beginning to enjoy my lunch, A blue marlin made his lunch selection...my right long rigger! He put on an incredible show, but wound up going deep, getting tail wrapped and dying. We brought him on board, and to the dock where he has been carved up and shared around people who wanted a piece for their smoker. The marlin weighed in at 438 pounds. Good job hanging in there Tommy! On top of everything else, it was a gorgeous day. Thanks Jim, and I look forward to the next time!

Tuesday, May 01, 2012: 5/1 Hatteras Offshore Fishing Report

The weather man tricked us again, but at least the fishing was pretty good!

It was supposed to be a light southwest wind today, but the closer we got to the blue water, the rougher it was. My group is tough and didn't mind, so went continued. We wound up with another nice catch of gaffers and a handful of blackfins. We also snagged a 20 pound king mackerel on a high speed lure on the way out. You may have noticed that Justin has been missing for the last couple trips. Well, IT'S A BOY!! Congratulations Justin and Samantha! Thanks again For a great day offshore Mike!
