Parks & WildlifeElizabethan GardensThe Elizabethan Gardens is home to majestic trees that greet visitors at this 16th century pleasure garden. Created by The Garden Club of North Carolina as a living memorial to the lost colonists, the gardens include highlights of the thatched gazebo, Shakespearean herb garden, flower bordered walkways, antique garden statuary and formal sunken gardens. Location: Located within Fort Raleigh adjacent to Waterside Theatre at 1411 National Park Drive. Hours: Open year-round. Hours vary with season. Contact: Pea Island National Wildlife RefugePea Island National Wildlife Refuge, a 6,000-acre wildlife haven located between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe, is located 5 miles south of Oregon Inlet. More than 360 species of birds call the Refuge home, and visitors can enjoy seeing a large variety of wading, shore and upland birds from spring to autumn. For your convenience, the observation platforms are located near the parking areas. Public interpretive programs are scheduled weekly during the summer and fall. Location: Between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe. Refuge Visitor's Center is located five miles south of the inlet. Hours: Refuge open daily during daylight hours. Admission: Free. Contact Information: (252) 987-2394 or (252) 987-1118 Nature Conservancy at Nags Head WoodsThe Nature Conservancy at Nags Head Woods is a 1,400-acre maritime forest with more than five miles of hiking trails and a visitor information center. Location: In Kill Devil Hills, turn west at traffic light across from McDonald's onto Ocean Acres Drive. Proceed about three-quarters of a mile through a residential neighborhood until the road turns to sand. Proceed down the hill. The visitor center is on the left. Hours: Please call. Admission: Donations are requested. Facilities: Restrooms, parking lot, self-guided trails. Contact Information: (252) 441-2525. Jockey’s Ridge State Park:Jockey's RIdge State Park, a 426-acre park in Nags Head, is home to the largest natural living sand dune on the East Coast. Two self-guided trails and nature programs are available to visitors year-round. Visitors to the park enjoy activities of hang gliding, kite flying and hiking. Also on site is a visitor center, small gift shop, museum, picnic facilities and restrooms. Location: US 158 Bypass, Milepost 12 1/2, Nags Head. Hours: Open year-round. Hours vary according to season. Admission: Free Services: Interpretive tours available (arrangements must be made in advance.) Facilities: Restrooms, visitor center, free parking, picnic area.
