Southern Shores is a private community town. This small town remains private because there is no large commercial district. The town was incorporated in 1979 and is about four square miles in size.
There is no public beach access and as such Southern Shores continues to remain a very private. Building trends in Southern Shores indicate that property owners are building larger, more elaborate homes. The town itself does not own any private lands. All of the land not owned by private individuals is owned by two civic associations. The civic association lands are used for recreation and green areas.
For the visiting tourist, Southern Shores has a network of biking, jogging and walking paths. There is also a private country club where the public can play golf. In a town where council meets to discuss whether or not to allow paint ball activities you should be able to find a quiet peaceful daytrip.
