About Our Company
Alex and Patty Risser purchased Outer Beaches Realty in 1986 when it was the fourth largest vacation rental management company on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. Frequent vacationers to the Outer Banks, they purchased a home in 1985. One year later, they purchased the company and moved to North Carolina from Vermont to start their business venture on the Outer Banks.
When the Rissers purchased the company, it had 94 homes in the rental program. Through implementation of technology, systems, customer service, and a lifelong desire to serve, the company now effectively manages about 500 vacation homes with an employee base exceeding 200 in the height of the summer. Throughout the Rissers’ ownership and management, Outer Beaches has served thousands of Owners and hundreds of thousands of Guests.
How did they do it? From their past education and work experiences in the healthcare software field, Alex and Patty both knew that in order to survive in any business, they would have to treat customer service as their top priority. Whether it’s offering a payment plan, replacing a cottage’s refrigerator during your vacation or simply telling you to have a good day when speaking to you on the phone, Alex and Patty have insisted from the very beginning that their Guests be treated with the utmost standard of customer service and care, exceeding your expectations at every encounter.
For Owners, Outer Beaches Realty strives to market its rental homes to the top market areas in the nation. We know who wants to come here and what they are looking for in their vacation cottage. We advertise in a variety of media, including online, direct mail, print advertising and promotional advertising. Our in-house marketing department also produces an annual rental brochure each year. Each home receives a complimentary listing in this brochure, as well as a listing on our website, OuterBeaches.com.

Alex brings an undergraduate degree from Elizabethtown College in PA in business and computer science and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University to bear on the success of the company. He has also served as President of the International Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA) and acquired industry certifications as GRI (Graduate of Real Estate Institute), CRB (Certified Residential Broker), GREEN certification, and the prestigious CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) held by less than 10% of Real estate agents worldwide. Alex believes in continuing education and insures the Outer Beaches staff does so as well, at all levels.

Letter from the President
Thanks for considering Outer Beaches Realty for your Hatteras Island vacation. I can remember the first time I came to Hatteras, having discovered it as I was setting up a computer system at a hospital in Elizabeth City back in the 70’s. We stayed in the Tasker house in Rodanthe which has since succumbed to the encroaching ocean. Of course our stay was during a storm so we experienced the thrills and beauty of Mother Nature. It was love at first sight! I still have a college buddy who was with me on that first trip who has returned almost every year and whose kids consider Hatteras as an annual ritual – time to push for those grandkids now, DZ!
Both my children, Kimmy and AJ, were born on Hatteras (well, that hospital in Elizabeth City, anyway). The Island is part of their heritage, and they will always have a little tar on their heels.
Over the years we have been fortunate to develop great friendships with our Guests, Owners, fellow Outer Beaches Realty employees and other residents. Hatteras is truly a warm and inviting place to develop and strengthen such bonds. You cannot help but to enjoy those who share the experience.
