Vacation guests with mobility concerns are encouraged to browse our selection of handicap friendly Hatteras Island vacation rentals. Designed to provide comfortable accommodations for all family members, these homes and condos come in a variety of sizes, and are located throughout all seven villages on Hatteras Island.
Some of Outer Beaches Realty's vacation rentals are especially equipped for disabled persons. The "Handicap Friendly" amenity denotes these vacation rentals, and the detailed individual descriptions will reveal the level of accessibility and handicap friendly features.
However, due to space limitations this information may not be complete. Individual homes MAY have a variety of features such as elevators, ramps, roll-in showers, wide doorways and handicap accessible bathrooms. Some homes will have some of these features, but not necessarily all homes. Some homes may not be handicap accessible to all levels. Please ask your Guest Services Representative about the specific features of any handicap friendly home you are considering for your vacation.
PLEASE NOTE: Most homes do not meet the federal uniform standards for design or construction as prescribed for handicap accessible buildings. Parties requiring homes with the Handicap Friendly designation may make future year reservations beginning in October of the second preceding year (i.e. year 2014 reservations may be made as early as October 2012).
The Outer Banks has a number of area attractions and amenities that are handicap friendly and open for all visitors. The medical center in Avon on Hatteras Island obviously provides a handicapped ramp, as do all of the area restaurants, (as required by law), ensuring that everyone can enjoy the OBX's many attractions.
For convenient beach trips, guests are advised to contact the local Hatteras Island beach rental businesses, which specialize in providing a seemingly unlimited variety of beach gear on a daily or weekly basis. Ocean Atlantic Rentals, which serves all of Hatteras Island, offers wheelchairs that are designed to travel on the beach, and can be rented on a weekly basis.
Major attractions on Hatteras Island, such as the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, also feature ramps adjacent to their visitors' centers, and the public beach accesses managed by the National Park Service also generally feature at least two handicapped parking spaces as well. Visitors can simply go to popular public parking areas, such as the Salvo Day Use area, the Buxton Lifeguarded Beach, or the Old Lighthouse Site to find easy-to-access handicapped parking near the beach.
For an even easier way to access the beach, visitors may want to obtain a beach driving permit, which allows licensed drivers with a 4WD vehicle to access the shoreline via a number of 4WD beach ramps that are located throughout the island. To obtain a permit, applicants will need to stop by a local National Park Service office, (there is one located by the lighthouse in Buxton), watch a 10 minute video on beach driving safety, and pay a weekly or annual fee. With miles of designated shoreline that allows vehicles, driving to the beach has become one of the most popular and most convenient ways for vacationers with limited mobility to access the Outer Banks' gorgeous miles of beaches.
With the accessibility and large number of vacation rentals that feature handicap friendly amenities, Outer Beaches is happy to welcome all visitors to Hatteras Island. For any questions about specific handicap friendly features, we encourage you to talk with our vacation rental specialists who are happy to help you find the perfect vacation rental for your family.
