The village of Waves offers vacationers a chance to stay in beautiful vacation rental properties amidst white, sandy beaches with glimpses of the crystal clear Atlantic Ocean, all while offering a peaceful and relaxing setting that we all seek while on vacation. When choosing to stay in Waves, whether it is on the soundside or oceanside, visitors will be astounded at the beauty and serenity of being surrounded by ocean waters in seemingly every direction.
The village of Waves was originally part of the Chicamacomico settlement, which also encompassed the northern village of Rodanthe and the southern village of Salvo. The name Chicamacomico was a variation of a Native American name that dated back to when colonists first settled in the area. In 1874, the U.S. Postal Service decided to rename the Chicamacomico area to Rodanthe. With continued settlement of the area, the three villages of Waves, Salvo and Rodanthe were formed with Rodanthe being known as 'North Rodanthe,' Waves being called 'South Rodanthe,' and Salvo being known as 'Clark.' Things became a little less confusing by the year 1939 when the village of 'South Rodanthe' received its own post office and officially became known as Waves, while 'North Rodanthe' was rechristened Rodanthe.
Thousands of vacationers head to the Outer Banks each year to enjoy time basking in the sunlight, building sandcastles, and splashing around in the cool, refreshing ocean waters. Though a sleepy town during the off-season with many local businesses temporarily closed, this village comes to life at the start of the tourist season and offers many fun and enjoyable activities for both vacationers and locals alike to indulge in.
With the soundside providing less surf and calmer waters, many people will want to take advantage of these perfect conditions and try their hand at kiteboarding, a sport that has been rapidly growing in popularity over the years. In the village of Waves, visitors will find Real Kiteboarding, a facility that provides lessons for those wanting to learn, and gear to give you your chance to fly across the wave tops. In addition to kiteboarding, many windsurfers will spend their time racing across the tops of the waves with their colorful sails providing a dazzling sight to any and all that come to to the soundside beaches to watch. Kayakers and canoeing enthusiasts will also love the opportunity to paddle around the sound and explore the local marsh waterways.
Those who prefer land-based activities can head up the road to visit the historic Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, or can stop by the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, where visitors will get a chance to observe an amazing array of birds, reptiles and more. Cameras and binoculars definitely need to be handy! Waves also offers great restaurants to enjoy delicious, fresh seafood and also offers campgrounds in addition to the wide variety of vacation rental homes. If you are ready for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation in a village that offers much in terms of beautiful surroundings and fun, then Waves will be the vacation spot for you this year.
