Recycling on Hatteras Island is a part of Hatteras Island’s initiative is working towards sustaining the health and wellbeing of our coastal environment. These efforts include reducing the use and distribution of plastics, organized community beach clean-ups, volunteer-led awareness projects, and a self-service recycling program.
In this article, we wanted to reemphasize the existence of our recycling program here on the Island. The main location for recycling on Hatteras Island is at the Buxton Transfer Station.
Off-Island, recycling bins are often on the driveways along with trash cans. While Hatteras Island homes do not have recycling bins or recycling pick-up programs like this, we do have a self-service recycling station at the Buxton Transfer Station.
Simply store your recyclable materials in a bin and take the items to the station during their hours of operation. The station has 5 different bins for sorting paper, cardboard, styrofoam, plastic and metal, and glass bottles. Each bin is labeled with examples on what should be added.
