The Cape Hatteras Electrical Cooperative (CHEC) has a suite of solutions that will can help Owners reduce energy costs in their vacation rental home. Many may think that solar is the only way to better improve their sustainable energy usage, but there are 6 other programs offered right here on Hatteras Island that may help:

Marathon Water Heaters:

CHEC sells high efficiency water heaters directly to its members. They are the marathon brand and we stock them here in Buxton. CHEC will deliver anywhere on the Island for free.

Energy Star Rebates:

Homeowners who purchase washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers or dishwashers that have the Energy Star label can receive $25 bill credits for each. They must submit a copy of their receipt and the attached form.

Secondary Fridge/Freezer Recycling:

Homeowners who wish to get rid of an older inefficient secondary refrigerator or freezer (to reduce load) can fill out the attached form and receive a $100 bill credit. CHEC will remove the old unit from their property and recycle for FREE.

Energy Efficiency Loans:

Homeowners who are looking to purchase a high-efficiency appliance or complete a weatherization project may qualify for a loan up to $6,000 from CHEC. This is very popular for members who have to replace their HVAC equipment.  Qualifying appliances and projects include:

  • Heat Pump ≥ SEER 15
  • Central AC ≥ SEER 15
  • Heat Pump Water Heater
  • Ground Source Heat Pump
  • Solar Water Heater
  • Replacement Windows
  • Mobile Home Roof-overs
  • Insulation – ceiling, walls, floor
  • Duct Repair/Replacement

Energy Assessment

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative offers free home energy assessments for residential members. Our trained energy specialists will conduct an exterior and interior walk-through of your home and evaluate the energy efficiency of the building, appliances, heating and cool system, and lighting.

You’ll be given a detailed list of recommendations showing you what steps can be taken to reduce your energy costs. The written report will provide you with a variety of energy saving options. You can use these recommendations to choose an option that best suits your needs.
