Hatteras Island: A Dog’s Paradise

Spending time with a dog is one of the most rewarding things on the planet; to spend time with an animal that loves you as much as you love him/her back. It can be hard to leave them while on vacation, but the truth is, you don’t have to! Hatteras Island provides experiences not only for humans but dogs alike! And with Outer Beaches, you can find the perfect home to accommodate everyone you love.

Every dog needs their exercise, and there are plenty of ways to get them tired and content here on Hatteras.

Hatteras Island’s nature trails are miles of beautiful trees and landscape. The shade and easy-to-walk paths encourage long walks with your dog. Near the lighthouse, these trails are sure to give you and your dog a quiet time away.

Family jogging with their dog on the beach

The beach is a splendid way to spend the day, especially with the pup! Take them to splash around and explore their surroundings. The soft sand is quite comfortable for the paw, but be sure to be cautious of the temperature. Booties are a reliable purchase for when the sand is too hot for comfort.

Dog on a surfboard riding the waves

Believe it or not, some dogs can surf! Confident aqua dogs are perfect for riding some waves. Take your dog to the shore break with his own board or yours to shred small waves. However, make sure your dog is comfortable on a surfboard and a proven swimmer. Have them wear a life vest and never force them to do anything uncomfortable.

Since your dog needs his daily runs, why not spend them at the beach? Run on the shoreline of America’s National Seashore and take in the views and the sounds of crashing waves and chirping seagulls. The ideal times to run are at sunrise and sunset. Spoil your dog with these beautiful sights and cool breezes. The perfect time to bond with an owner.

If you’re not feeling the beach or maybe want a change of running scenery, try the Tri-village sidewalk. The sidewalk is packed with grand houses and soundfront scenes. Their proximity to both ocean and sound create enticing views that are hard to forget. That’s not the only special about the tri-villages, click here to find out more about our historic villages.

There are other things to do on Hatteras with your pup besides running. Pamlico Sound presents the world’s largest swimming pool for the world’s best boy; perfect for the aqua dog. Picnic by the water and spend some time with the whole family. If you can’t think of a picnic meal for your dog, try these Frozen Peanut Butter Banana Treats! Keep your dog cold while giving him the snack of a lifetime.

The sound isn’t only for swimming in. There is so much more for your dog! Paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing all are safe activities that you can do with your best friend! Sail on a smooth sound with nothing but the sound of your paddle gently cutting through the water. And your furry friend barking at every bird in the sky.

Even on a relaxing night, there’s no reason for the fun to stop. Dock jumping is a pastime every swimmer will love. Throw their favorite toy into the water and watch as they leap to fetch it. More than likely they’ll expect you to throw it again. Soundfront homes are perfect for dock jumping. Their small docks or long piers will allow them to take these leaps of faith.
