Hello from Hatteras Island,
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect. Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to impact the Island starting tomorrow night, Thursday, July 8th. Heavy rainfall of up to 3 inches, isolated tornadoes, tropical storm strength winds (max 1-minute sustained surface wind ranges from 39 to 73 mph), high surf, dangerous rip currents, and minor water level rise of up to 2 feet above ground along the soundside could occur.
Guests currently in OBR homes, PLEASE prepare your home for the effects of this storm. We ask that you secure all loose outside items, including deck chairs, trash cans, and anything that could be blown around by high winds, and securely lock windows and doors. Be prepared to move cars from low lying areas such as soundside homes due to possible flooding.
If you are on the Island, please be prepared to encounter adverse weather conditions,
- blowing sand and standing water
- heavy rainfall and flash flooding
- high surf and dangerous rip currents
- tropical storm strength wind
- isolated tornadoes
- soundside flooding
We also recommend that you follow NCDOT NC12 for up to date road conditions concerning NC 12. NCDOT will post temporary road closures and openings. We’ll continue to monitor the national weather reports and statements from Dare County Emergency Management as more information develops.
